Window on the Work

Cari_Window on the Work

This is my mediation. Pen, ink and paper. And a pool of light.

I’ve not been posting much, because of this, working.

A young visitor to my studio took this photo the other day. I wouldn’t even quit working to show him around. So he took this, a window on my work.

I usually don’t wear the glove AND use a guard sheet, but somehow my left hand is leaving enough oil on the paper that it resists the ink the further down I go. I prefer to use the glove, because the guard paper sometimes shifts and smears the ink.

I am gratified to see myself sitting up straight, a posture I have worked hard to achieve, to preserve my neck and shoulders.

Thanks for visiting. Now, I must away.

I have always wanted to run an article in Alphabet about studio life: rooms, views, tools, books, postures (!), etc., so I like very much the photo of your hands at work.

I rather liked it myself, Jane. I don’t have too many of them. Thanks for reading!

I always like to see photos of calligraphers in their studios. Such a familiar sight — the paper, the board, the cushion, the guard sheet, the guidelines — even when the surroundings vary so widely from studio to studio.
