Morning in the Studio

reflection of calligraphy tools through sunny windowNew beginnings in the studio, after many weeks away from this favorite place of mine. This morning we had a break in the clouds and the sun streamed in the window, silhouetting my pens and brushes against a blank sheet of paper. It seemed auspicious for the new projects and books I have planned. Below is an image of the studio as I see it when I reach the top of the spiral staircase. Sometimes when I arrive I breathe deeply and say aloud “hello,” as if I’m seeing an old friend.

Alongside the signatures are the tools I love for this work: my scalpel for cutting paper, a Starrett straightedge to cut against (how much easier my life became when I discovered these two tools and got rid of my Exacto knives and cork-backed rulers forever), and my teflon bone folder from Volcano Arts, which feels wonderful in the hand.
