Marking Summer Solstice

I like to mark the turning of the year in my art journal, but never know just what form it will take. This was a little scrap of gilding on black paper that was left over from another use, and it resembled the brilliance of the horizon when the sun is rising, oh so early on this longest day of the year. Molten light.

Sun Sketches Journal

I have been working with celestial images in preparation for a new project, making some visual notes from medieval manuscript illuminations, the drawings of William Blake, and older incised pagan symbols from Scandinavia. Many books are open on my work table as I drift through looking for representations of the heavenly orbs, in all the various ways they have been represented through time and cultures.

Love this, and love the idea of the journal of images for later use. That little snippet of gold on black – just wonderful!
