Marking Brigid’s Day

Brigids Day Journal Page

A Brigid’s Cross, a sunwheel made of ink, to begin a new journal.

Brigids Day Journal Page Reverse

Turning the page, the foundational darkness can be seen as a ghost image under the fresh new growth of flowering branches. Days have grown longer since Yule, and still underground or just emergent in the lengthening sun, the green soul of life swells in this earliest springtime marker of the year. The moon is new, still in synchronicity with the great solar wheel.

We celebrated Brigid’s Eve last night, to bless the home, the hearth, the craft, the forge, the spring, as Brigid would, speaking some poetry, shining some light on our paths, what we want for our work in the world. I especially love the blessing of Brigid as collected by Alexander Carmichael in Carmina Gadelica.

I am under the shielding of
good Brigid each day,
I am under the shielding of
good Brigid each night.
I am under her keeping,
Each early and late,
every dark, every light.
Brigid is my comrade woman.
Brigid is my maker of song,
Brigid is my helping woman,
My choicest of women.
My woman of guidance.

I wish  you many blessings on your path in the year ahead!

Thanks for leading our family’s Brigid circle last night. Ending with “To My Old Brown Earth” written and sung by Pete Seeger was a perfect way to remember who we are.

What a blessing the invocation to Brigid is and what a special blessing the video of Pete Seeger is. It made me weep. A most blessed Brigid’s day to you. Thank you for sharing.
