A Blue Moon and a New Year

Blue Moon 2009_2

Open the backdoor and let the old year out.
Say out with the bad with a mighty shout!
Open the front door and let the new year in.
Let good health, wealth and happiness begin!

Here is December’s Blue Moon. I came around the corner and was stopped in my tracks by this most beautiful beacon of bountiful light. By the time I got the tripod out, most of the daylight was faded from the sky.

Thanks to Beth Ridenour, a photographer I met at Ghost Ranch, who spent some time with me on a windy ridge in 2007 to teach me how to capture the moon in my camera.

May 2010 be as full of blessings, lessons, gifts, achievements, courage and hope as 2009 was. Thanks for reading.

This is indeed a beautiful moon, beautifully photographed. We celebrated the new year last night with fireworks by the water but sadly the sky remained cloudy and the full moon wasn’t visible. All the best to you and yours, Carol

I photographed this moon on the 30th, since full moons actaully appear that way for about three days, and I didn’t want to take a chance on missing her on the 31st. The trick to night photography is a low aperture number and a fast shutter speed (the cloud were moving fast across the face of the moon) and then, take lots because only one in ten might turn out – allow some experimentation! As for blue moon, this is something of an artificial construct, since months derive from moons, and there couldn’t really be more than one full moon in a lunation. Still it sounded very romantic to end 2009 with a blue moon. Happy 2010, everyone!

Cari, What a beautiful photograph! I remember our mesa photo adventure. It was a wonderful sharing experience. Thank you, Beth

Thanks, Beth, I’m so grateful for the lessons learned on that windy evening! Here is a link to a photographer who has inspired me with her Full Moon photos (all filed under Lady Moon of course), and her musings are equally beautiful: http://kerrdelune.blogspot.com/search/label/lady moon

Cari, Are you selling prints of the moon. I would love this picture of luna, one of my favorites parts of god.
